The Ultimate Hygge Playlist

Hygge is genuinely one of the best discoveries I’ve made. I felt aware of this concept my whole life, but I didn’t know there was a word for it. Then I discovered that the Danes have actually defined this wonderful feeling and made it a part of their culture.

I thought it would be helpful to provide a definition of hygge, so here is the one I found:

hyg·ge
/ˈh(y)o͞oɡə,ˈho͝oɡə/
noun
  1. a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).

See, how freaking delightful does that sound? But even that definition isn’t quite enough to capture what hygge really means. Honestly, I think music is one of the things that has made me experience the feeling of hygge the most.

Music is an important part of hygge that few people talk about. I believe music can significantly change the atmosphere of your home. You can light candles and have lovely lighting and fill your home with the smell of baked goods, but if you’re listening to music that doesn’t add a cozy and calm ambiance to your home, you won’t feel quite as hygge as you could.

One of the main goals of this blog is to help you enjoy being at home and create a cozy environment in your house. There are many different ways to do that, but I believe music is one of the easiest ways to make your house feel more like a home.

I think there are definitely certain sounds and instruments that sound more hygge than others. Acoustic, folky music is definitely the way to go. I have spent a significant amount of time seeking out artists that I not only enjoy listening to, but that give me a certain feeling and, most of all, make me feel more like myself. Music affects my psychological health on a huge level, and I’m sure it does yours as well.

There are certain songs that make me feel cozy inside (that sounds corny but it’s real), so I decided to put together a playlist of songs that I believe embody the feeling of hygge. I attempted to embed the Spotify playlist in this post, but it does not appear to be showing up, so here it is.

For those of you who want a much more condensed version of the playlist with a few carefully selected songs, here is a shortened version:

A Hygge Playlist-5

Some of these artists are my absolute favorites. In this graphic, I only included one song from each artist, but there are many more great songs by all of them, so you should definitely check them out. There’s plenty more hygge music out there, but I think these artists and songs are a great start.

I really hope that you get as much joy out of these songs as I have. Be sure to listen to them while you’re doing hyggelig things such as making homemade cookies, having a glass of wine with friends, or curling up with a blanket while candles are burning.
